EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a structured psychotherapy that helps the brain safely reprocess memories so they lose their emotional intensity.
When you experience an overwhelming or traumatic event, your brain's natural ability to process information can get disrupted. The memory becomes "stuck" in your nervous system, keeping the original emotions, negative self-beliefs, and physical sensations alive in the present.
EMDR restarts this natural healing mechanism through a technique called Bilateral Stimulation (BLS). During a session, you will briefly focus on the distressing memory while simultaneously experiencing left-to-right sensory patterns. Sessions will either be one hour or 90 minutes depending on your individual needs which will be discussed during the consultation.
